They were an absolute disaster when they arrived at our shop from being exposed to salt water for who knows how long. Now that’s a tray! When we took in this tray, it was separating at the rim. After soldering the open areas, it was polished with care in order to preserve it’s ornate detail. A finial clear lacquer coating was also applied.

Rim Locks originated and are more prevalent on the east coast. This one in satin nickel was made for a customer here in the mid-west. Check out the drop pull handle that is on the inside. The only hardware on the outside would be the knob, rosette and cylinder cover. A door knocker is also shown.

This is an original bell from the new york central railroad. It was a retirement gift in recognition for service from 1908 to 1957! The frame was cleaned and painted while the bell and plaque were polished and lacquered without effecting the original engraving.

We did this project for a commercial builder in Chicago over a 3 week period. They were restoring the exterior hardware on a building with over a dozen exterior doors. Vintage thumb levers, mail slots and cylinders were provided as well as our own wilmette hardware mortise locks. The finish was an antique satin brass with a lacquer coating.

Did you know that there is more to the restoration process than just “dipping” it in silver? We first photograph the item, then a drawing or sketch is made while it is dis-assembled for finishing. Each individual piece is then polished, plated and lacquered before it is re-assembled and wired.

I think I’ll do something different and post the following comment from another happy customer:

After providing some pictures to you via email and obtaining a quotation, Al Bar was able to turn our ‘pop-up’ request around in less than two days, just-in-time for our event. This door handle is no off-the-shelf item, it was specially ordered from Europe long ago, so it wasn’t a matter of just ordering up a new one. It may seem like an insignifacant detail, this door handle, but we are a design-driven company where details really matter, and the handle is literally the first object every customer sees and touches in our showroom (thus the 20 years of wear, right down to the brass!). The re-plated door handle is just as magnificent as when it was new, and the owner was very pleased.

This chandelier actually had a candle on one of the arms that started to burn. First the wiring was replaced with new sockets and candle covers. It was then hand cleaned, waxed and missing crystal was hung.
